Why I Encourage Marriage Conferences

by Pastor Ken Baldwin

Thirty years ago this April, my wife Terry and I got married. Before we got married we attended a marriage conference to prepare for what was ahead. Of course, we really did not know what was ahead, but expected the people at the conference to help us. And they did. The people at that conference helped us tremendously. They still are helping, in many ways.

Bride and groom hold their hands on an old Bible.

One decision we made at that conference was to commit to attending a marriage conference about every two years (or as needed). Sounds like a doctor’s prescription, doesn’t it? Well, we do believe that Dr. Jesus does prescribe for us, as a couple, that we grow in grace and love toward God and each other. Over the last 30 years, we have attended numerous marriage conferences and have even helped lead several!

We love to share the story of grace and mercy about how God brought us together. We love to talk about what He has done in us and through us. There have been hard times and dry times to deal with in our marriage and home. There also have been many more joyous times. By God’s grace, we have weathered the storms and felt His breath in our sails. He has blessed us with a good marriage that is always becoming a better marriage.

All these reasons and experiences are why we are so excited about the 3 to 1 Marriage Conference that is coming to Kinney Avenue Christian Fellowship on Friday, April 28 through Saturday, April 29.

This conference is designed for all couples, whether it’s a couple anticipating marriage or a couple that’s been married for many years. There’s always room to grow in married relationships and we should keep growing.

Couples that are Christ-centered in their conviction exemplify the mystery that the Apostle Paul spoke of in Ephesians 5:32-33:

As the Scriptures say, ‘A man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.’ This is a great mystery, but it is an illustration of the way Christ and the church are one.

This picture of a godly marriage between one man and one woman is a representation of the marriage of the Lamb, Jesus Christ, to His Bride, the Church, when it will occur at the marriage banquet in heaven as told by John in Revelation 19:6-9:

Then I heard again what sounded like the shout of a vast crowd or the roar of mighty ocean waves or the crash of loud thunder: ‘Praise the Lord! For the Lord our God, the Almighty reigns. Let us be glad and rejoice, and let us give honor to Him. For the time has come for the wedding feast of the Lamb, and His bride has prepared herself. She has been given the finest of pure white linen to wear.’ For the fine linen represents the good deeds of God’s holy people. And the angel said to me, ‘Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding feast of the Lamb.’ And he added, ‘These are true words that come from God.’

That passage alone should motivate us to do all we can by the Holy Spirit’s help to present our marriages in the here and now as a testimony of marriage that will happen there in heaven.

I encourage every couple to consider this opportunity to invest in their relationship and take advantage of this wonderful time to strengthen and refresh their commitment to one another before the Lord.
